Symbol on Rider Waite Tarot Cards

I got a question about the symbol on a specific version of Rider-Waite Tarot cards. Here is the question:

Hi Avia, I was wondering if you could help me…

There is a symbol on Tarot cards (all of them) belonging to the Rider-Waite deck. It’s a vertical line with some squiggly lines running through it and a dot. Could you please tell me what this Tarot symbol represents?

Thanks, Misty in Carolina

Hi Misty,

For this particular deck (Rider-Waite), the symbol you’re referring to is a maker’s mark. It’s the signature mark of the illustrator for this Tarot deck, who is, Pamela Colman Smith.

Yep, Avia’s right. They are the initials of the artist, Pamela Coleman Smith.

You can see the P the C and the S with a full stop on all the cards.
